Are you running your business in constant reactive mode?
Are you doing-it-all yourself to get tasks completed?
Do you find that you do not have enough time to focus on growing your business?
Are you continuously struggling to control your business?
Can your business function without you there?
If your business brings in less than $250,000 there is a high probability that you are stuck in the cycle. I can relate to the piling stress of being the one-person show. Demands of mounting responsibilities and burden of incomplete tasks prevent you from focusing on business growth. If this merry-go-round is leaving you tired and discouraged, there is a solution to all these challenges – business systems. As a business owner, business systems are important to create an environment of consistency, stability, and scalability.
What are Business Systems?
In this context, systems are sets of processes or methods executed daily in the same way, in an effective and efficient manner. It has less to do with what’s being done, and more to do with how it’s being done. This can be performed through online tools or by another person without your direct involvement. Examples of this include an online auto-responder for email subscriptions or automatically forwarding emails to an assistant or employee. Effective systems produce measurable results that are consistent, predictable and ultimately benefits you and your customer.
Many tend to confuse systems with processes. A process is a collection of related, structured activities or tasks (also known as procedures) that produces a specific product or service for your customers. Having processes in place increases the consistency and productivity within your business, and you’ll be surprised at how fast it will be noticed by your customers.
Why Business Systems Are Important
With systems, your customers know what you’re doing.
With systems, your customers will know what to expect from your products and services.
With systems, your customers will be comfortable giving you their loyalty and confidence.
I’ve had the privilege to walk with many companies in various stages of their development. I have helped systemize their business, bringing them back from the brink of chaos or complacency to a stable environment. Systems will stop the merry-go-round and reduce the hair-on-fire reaction. Once your first system is in place, you’ll have more time to commit all the knowledge that’s locked in your mind and documented to form. Now you can focus on scaling your business for growth.
In the next post, we will examine why business systems are important. Cure the seat-of-your-pants operation, or the Cowboy management style by streamlining, growth, profitability, competitiveness, and value.
