Our confidence is affected by the messages we say to ourselves, whether they are positive or negative – positive messages result in a heightened self-esteem while the negative one has the opposite effect. One of the ways that you can give your self-esteem a big boost is when you craft powerful affirmations.
What is an affirmation? An affirmation is simply a positive statement that you make about yourself.
People refrain from using affirmations because of the uncertainty they have about what to say, and how to word them for greatest effect. Everyone has different affirmations, and it’s important that you create your own; this enables the power you hold over yourself. Below I have listed some simple tips to help you write effective affirmations.
The Art to Craft Powerful Affirmations
1. Be in the Present
Use present tense when you craft powerful affirmations. The wording of that affirmation does two things: it empowers you with the addition of the words “choose to,” and it puts the time frame in the present moment.
2. Convincing
Make your affirmations believable to you. Instead, try to focus on a process rather than an end result in your affirmations such as “I am learning to not let my fear hold me back from taking action today”.
3. Use The Right Tone
When you recount affirmations, you can do so in your mind or out loud, either way, focus heavily on the tone you use. Instil an element of love and compassion into the words, don’t cast out emotion like you were reading a newspaper.
Your subconscious picking up on the emotional piece instead of words of your affirmation. Which do you think would have a greater impact on your mind – saying the words “I really love myself” with a tone of love and tenderness or sarcasm?
4. Repeat Twice a Day
Once you craft your affirmations, make time to say them several times a day. Make it into a system. I repeat my affirmations twice a day because it works better for me; once in the morning when I wake up and once before I head to bed. Counter your negative and old emotions with new positive habits as much as possible. In the moments that you are aware that you’re thinking negatively about yourself, keep reciting your more positive thoughts especially on a regular basis.
5. Keep At It
Remember that old ways and habits take time to change; replace the negative messages in your mind with something more positive. It may be a few weeks or months before you notice the change, so you may think it isn’t working or notice an obvious change in how you think and feel. The key is to keep with it. You will begin to see a difference.

You may be wondering what some of my affirmations look like, so I want to leave you with a few:
- Today I am willing to fail in order to succeed
- I release my hesitation and make room for SUCCESS!
- As my commitment to others grow, so does my wealth
Like all changes, when you craft powerful affirmations, it will be a gradual effect. It begins little by little where you will be feeling more positive, lighter and happier. Your greatest confirmation is when others can see the change in you.
